The 90-Second Stretch

Unstick Your Hips Before Dinner

One move on the floor fixes what your chair broke.

Your hips are lying to you right now.

They feel fine. You stood up from your desk a few minutes ago. Walked to the kitchen. Poured some coffee. Everything moved the way it should.

But here's what's really happening under the surface.

After eight hours in a chair, your hip flexors shorten. They tighten like a fist around the front of your pelvis. That pulls your hips forward into a tilt. Your lower back picks up the slack — every single time.

By 5 PM, that dull ache between your belt line and your tailbone isn't your back. Your hips are screaming through the only channel they've got.

Most people never figure this out. They blame their back. Next come the lumbar pillows. The chair adjustments. A hundredth Google search for “best desk posture.”

None of that fixes the real problem. Because the problem was never your back.

The fix isn't in your chair. It's on your floor.

8 hours of sitting. 90 seconds to undo it.

One stretch. Both sides. Before dinner.

The 90/90 stretch targets both hips at once. Physical therapist Lindy Royer calls it “the single best position for opening up hips that sit all day.”

The name comes from the shape. Both knees bent at 90 degrees — one leg in front of you, one behind. That's all there is to it.

No equipment. No warm-up. Skip the YouTube tutorial. Just a patch of carpet and 90 seconds of your evening.

Doctors Warn: Think Twice Before Drinking Bottled Water

You drink water every day to keep your body healthy.

But what if your plastic water bottle is exposing your brain to something harmful?

Scientists at the University of New Mexico made a disturbing discovery.

Even more concerning?

Researchers found higher concentrations of these particles in brain samples from people with dementia.

While scientists haven't proven that plastic causes memory loss, the findings raise serious questions.

And here's something most people don't realize:

That means some everyday habits could be increasing your exposure without you knowing it.

→ The 5 PM Fix

1. Sit on the floor. Plant your front leg so your knee and ankle both form 90-degree angles. Your shin should run straight across your body.

2. Set your back leg to the side. Same deal — knee and ankle at 90 degrees. Your shin points straight behind you.

3. Sit tall. Press your front knee gently toward the floor. Hold for 45 seconds. You'll feel it deep in the outside of your hip.

4. Swing both legs to the other side. Hold another 45 seconds.

That's the whole routine. One stretch. Both sides. Done before the microwave finishes.

Here's why the 90/90 works better than what you're doing now.

A standard hip flexor stretch hits one muscle in one direction. The 90/90 opens your hip in rotation — the exact movement pattern your chair steals from you all day long. You're not just lengthening tight muscles. You're teaching your hips to move the way they were built to.

Royer ran an informal test with her desk-worker clients. Each person held the 90/90 for 45 seconds per side, once a day, right after leaving the office. Every single one reported less lower-back stiffness by day five. Some felt a difference after the first session.

Two weeks in, most of them stopped reaching for the ibuprofen they used to take around 4 PM.

You don't need a yoga class for this. A foam roller won't help either. All it takes is the floor, a minute and a half, and the willingness to sit down before you sit down for dinner.

Ninety seconds on the floor beats eight hours in a chair.

Try it tonight before dinner. Your back will thank your hips in the morning.

Make today a little better.
